Aligning with the Infinite
While this life experience is characterized by the appearance of duality, in truth all is one. We are each a unique and inextricable component of the Infinite, just as the Infinite resides within our every cell. When we know this deeply and live with this holistic awareness, our life comes into greater and greater harmony and balance. We are more often awake and alert to the subtle and unspoken messages that are interwoven into the world around us. And while we still encounter challenges, we feel that we can move through them courageously, and we emerge stronger and wiser than we otherwise would have been.
Outer Symbols and Visitations
Just as you are not separate from the Infinite, you are not separate from the world around you. Neither is the world around you separate from you; indeed, each reflects and contains the other. Because of this, and because like attracts like, one of the most basic ways of discerning divine messages is through a recurring, seemingly coincidental encounter with a particular thing, such as a symbol, image, word, number, plant, story, or creature. Because the forms that this may take are truly endless, and because the symbolism of any given item will be at least slightly different for everyone, I think the best way for me to begin to give you an idea of how this works is to give you a few examples from my own life; at the end of the section, I’ll walk you through receiving these types of messages on your own. Please notice that the Universe does not communicate with us in the same way that our buddies do; while the messages can sometimes be quite clear, they are often more of a validation or gentle nudge, calling attention to a pattern or putting your mind at ease rather than unequivocally conveying a point.
The Lingam Keychain
Not long after I wrote a popular blog post about Chinese New Year and the Year of the Yang Wood Horse (a masculine year that is aligned with forward movement and the wood element), I had lunch with my girlfriend Angela, who had just returned from a yoga retreat in Bali. She gifted me with a lovely, extremely auspicious-feeling wooden souvenir keychain shaped like a penis, painted teal (a color associated with the wood element) and embellished with a flower (also associated with the wood element). She told me that, because of the fact that the god Shiva is honored in Bali, wooden lingams (as they are called) are quite popular spiritual items in the region. I loved it, especially because I had recently been paying special attention to honoring the Divine Masculine principle as well as my own sacred sexuality. The next day, as I ran on the beach holding my keys (along with the keychain), I encountered a small penis keychain that just happened to be washed up on the shore at exactly the point at which I first approached the edge of the waves. I interpreted
